Herbal supplements might help increase breast size by altering levels of reproductive hormones. In theory, these natural products work by causing alterations in the endocrine system similar to those seen in pregnant and nursing women. Despite their popularity, Mayo Clinic's Dr. Sandhya Pruthi warns against the routine use of herbal breast enhancers. Pruthi notes that compounds in these supplements can interact with prescription drugs or increase the risk of hormone-sensitive cancers. Consult your health care provider before using any product to increase your breast size.

Red Clover

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the flowers of the red clover plant contain considerable quantities of isoflavones. These estrogen-like compounds have been used to treat infertility, osteoporosis, menopause and other conditions related to declining estrogen levels. In theory, red clover might increase breast size by increasing estrogen levels, thereby improving the amount of blood and fat in the breasts. However, its long-term side effects are unknown and its exact effects are poorly understood.

Soy

Isoflavone supplements derived from the soybean have been used traditionally to elevate estrogen levels and stimulate the increased development of breast tissue. Although the National Institutes of Health acknowledges soy's use as a breast enhancer, it classifies this use as entirely theoretical. Soy isoflavone supplements could trigger an increased growth of breast tissue, but no well-designed studies have evaluated its effects.

Anise Seed

The seeds of the anise plant have a taste and odor similar to other estrogenic herbs, such as licorice and fennel. A study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology attributes these plants' similarities to anethole, dianethole and photoanethole, which are three medicinal compounds that increase levels of estrogen in the human body. The Journal of Ethnopharmacology regards anise seed as a potently estrogenic herb, noting its historic use as a breast enhancer, lactation stimulant and treatment for infertility. Like soy and red clover, anise seed might increase breast tissue by mimicking lactation-related changes in hormone balance.

Licorice

A powerful source of anethole and related compounds, licorice root has a long-standing history of use as a female tonic and natural medicine. The National Institutes of Health states that licorice root can increase levels of the reproductive hormones prolactin and estrogen, both of which influence breast size and fertility. Despite its common use as a culinary herb and its overall reputation for safety, licorice root can trigger a variety of serious side effects, including heart palpitations and hypertension. Ask your health care provider before using licorice root or any other medicinal herb for breast enhancement.
