A neti pot is a relatively inexpensive device used to irrigate the nasal passages and help clear the sinuses. Brown University Health Services reports that a couple of minutes a day of nasal irrigation can be more effective than weeks of treatment with antibiotics, decongestants and cortisone nasal sprays. Some minor side effects are possible when using a neti pot, but many can be overcome by adjusting the solution you put in it and the way you use it.
Getting Started
When you use a neti pot, you pour salt water into one nostril and let it drain out the other. For some people, that can cause a drowning sensation. The website eMedTV.com recommends adjusting the angle of the neti pot to help relieve the sensation. Keeping your mouth open while you irrigate your nasal passages might help, too. Still, eMedTV.com reports some people might always experience this unpleasant sensation to some degree.
Stinging Sensation
If you use too much or the wrong kind of salt in your neti pot, you can experience a stinging sensation. Brown University Health Services notes that you should not use common table salt to make your saline solution. It can contain iodine and “anti-clumping” additives that could be harmful if you use your neti pot often. Brown recommends using kosher salt or sea salt. To ensure that you’re not using too much, use a measuring spoon to measure 1 tsp. of salt and add it to warm water in the neti pot. Stir it well to dissolve all the salt crystals.
Nasal Burning
It’s important to get the water temperature right in your neti pot. Lukewarm is best. According to the website eMedTV.com, nasal burning can occur if you use water that’s too hot. Adjust the water temperature until you find the temperature that’s right for you.
Nasal Irritation
If you’re going to use a neti pot, keep it clean. Neti pots can be purchased for less than $20, as of July 2010, and are made of ceramic, molded plastic or stainless steel, and all should be cleaned thoroughly after each use. The website HealthMad reports some people get nasal irritation because they don’t do a good job of cleaning their neti Pots, allowing a buildup of allergens, bacteria and other irritants.
