Any male who's been kicked hard in the groin knows how debilitating it can be. However, self-defense expert Tom Patire notes that the bad guys know this, too. Because of its vulnerability, a male attacker will work to protect his groin during an assault or other altercation. Protecting yourself successfully with a kick to the groin works best when you distract the attacker first.
The Kick
Step 1
Swing your leg from the hip, like a baseball bat, in a straight line from where it is on the ground to your target.
Step 2
Keep your leg rigid from the knee down as your leg swings.
Step 3
Strike your attacker's groin with your shin bone--not your foot. For best results, aim for a point several inches above the groin, such as the navel.
Step 4
Retract your foot immediately and return it to the ground. Standing on one leg compromises your ability to fight or run.
In Context
Step 1
Start any encounter first looking for an opportunity to escape. Take every chance to increase the distance between you and an attacker. Position objects like tables and cars between you. Use words and body language to discourage the attack.
Step 2
Distract your attacker by attacking his head. You can do this with a punch or other hand strike. You can also do it by throwing something or even spitting at the face. The purpose of this step is to momentarily get your attacker's attention on the upper half of his body.
Step 3
Immediately deliver the kick to the groin.
Step 4
Follow up with additional strikes if necessary. Again, always take the first opportunity to escape.
