If you sometimes feel your pores are so large that someone could peer down into them, it may be time to consider pore-minimizing treatments. While large pores are chiefly due to genetic factors, other causes, including stress, your skincare routine and hormone fluctuations can cause the pores to become clogged and/or enlarged. For this reason, diminishing enlarged pores requires not only a targeted skincare routine, but also cover-up efforts that can "fill in" the pores, helping the skin tone to look more even.

Step 1

Utilize an exfoliating cleanser to remove the dead skin that can fill the pores, making them appear larger, according to CareFair.com. Exfoliating scrubs should only be used once or twice a week, however, in order to prevent over-sloughing the skin and causing irritation.

Step 2

Use a face wash that contains retinol or vitamin C on the days when you do not use an exfoliating facial scrub, according to DocShop.com. These ingredients are known as antioxidants, which help to fight free radicals in the skin. These free radicals can slow elastin and collagen production, and they can make the pores appear larger.

Step 3

Apply a moisturizer after cleansing that utilizes an alpha hydroxy acid, including glycolic acid. The small molecular structure of these acids can penetrate the skin and loosen the "glue" that binds dead skin cells to the pores. When this occurs, the pores appear tighter and may be less noticeable, according to DermaClear.

Step 4

Apply a skin primer to your face before applying makeup, according to DocShop.com. Primers create an invisible layer over the skin, preventing foundation or other makeup from seeping into the pores. Be sure to allow sufficient time for the primer to dry before applying other makeup.

Step 5

Ask a dermatologist or aesthetician if a microdermabrasion treatment could minimize your pores. This treatment utilizes a specialized wand that abrades the top of the skin, removing dead skin cells. The treatment also stimulates collagen production, which can improve the skin's texture.

Tips and Warnings

  • Cold temperatures can cause the pores to temporarily shrink--applying an ice cube to the skin can cause the pores to constrict, making them appear temporarily smaller.

Things You'll Need

  • Exfoliating scrub
  • Vitamin C or retinol face wash
