Cocoa butter has a thick consistency, a smooth and creamy texture, a melting point near body temperature and the rich scent of chocolate. These traits make cocoa butter a common ingredient in hand and body lotions. The emollient properties of this product of the cacao bean help soften, soothe and protect dry and damaged skin. While you can purchase commercially available cocoa butter lotions, with the proper ingredients and materials, you can also make cocoa butter lotion in your own kitchen.

Step 1

Combine the distilled water and glycerin in one of the stainless steel pots and heat this mixture to 170 degrees F for 10 minutes.

Step 2

Combine the cocoa butter, olive oil, coconut oil and beeswax in the second pot. Heat until the beeswax has melted. Hold the temperature at 170 degrees F for 10 minutes.

Step 3

Pour the combined oils, water and glycerin mixture into the stainless steel bowl. Blend thoroughly with the stick blender to combine the ingredients. Continue to blend them until the lotion thickens.

Step 4

Cool the lotion to approximately 120 degrees F. Add the Germall to the lotion. Blend it in thoroughly.

Step 5

Add more water if the lotion is too thick. If too thin, add more melted beeswax. Blend until you have achieved the desired consistency. Cool the cocoa butter lotion to room temperature. Pour it into a sealable container.
