According to the Mayo Clinic, Topamax (topiramate) is used in the treatment of epilepsy to control some types of seizures, and is also prescribed for prevention of adult migraine headaches. Available in tablets and capsules, Topamax is only available by a doctor's prescription and should be taken exactly as ordered, either with or without food. If prescribed for children, the capsules may be opened and sprinkled on food, as long as the meal or snack is consumed immediately.
Eyes
Topamax side effects involving the eyes include increased eye pressure and redness in the eyes. Other optical side effects include uncontrolled, continuous rolling or back-and-forth eye movements. Contact your physician immediately if you experience any vision problems such as eye pain, double vision, blurred vision or vision that is rapidly decreasing.
Physical Problems
Common physical side effects of Topamax include dizziness, unsteadiness or clumsiness. Other physical side effects include burning, tingling or prickling sensations and unusual tiredness, drowsiness or weakness. Wait until you see how Topamax affects you before driving or using machinery. Topamax may also cause a change in the way your food tastes.
Mental Side Effects
Topamax commonly causes nervousness, confusion, speech and language problems. Other common side effects are generalized slowing of physical and mental activity, trouble concentrating, trouble paying attention and memory problems. Topamax may increase suicidal actions and thoughts (though this isn't common), so pay attention to your state of mind while using this drug.
Side Effects in Women
According to the Mayo Clinic, Topamax can also cause menstrual pain and other changes in the menstrual cycle in women. AARP states that some birth control pills may not be effective when taking Topamax, so discuss this with your doctor. You may need to use a different method of birth control.
