While many people say that golf is mostly mental, there are a few things you can do to improve the physical component of your game. Hitting the golf ball flush on every swing can not only take strokes off of your score but improve your overall game as well. As long as you prepare for each shot the same way by going through a mental checklist on how to hold the club, you can hit the ball flush more consistently.

Stance and Swing

Step 1

Bend your knees into a comfortable position so that the head of the club reaches the ground when you are in your stance. Focus on the spot toward the bottom of the ball where you want the club to hit as you prepare for your swing.

Step 2

Rotate your hips and bring your hands away from the ball in one fluid motion. Your hips should then start the downswing, as your hands and the club will then follow suit.

Step 3

Bring your inner elbow down with the upper half of your body as you begin swinging the club toward the ball. Getting your entire upper body involved will not only help you generate power, but also strike the ball cleaner and more flush. Remember to stay focused on the bottom half of the ball throughout the swing.

Step 4

Keep your head focused on where the ball initially was during and immediately after contact. Focus along with proper mechanics will help produce more flush ball strikes. Look up to follow the ball in flight only after the club has passed waist level on your follow-through.

Grip

Step 1

Relax your wrists and forearms as you grip the club. Gripping the club with too much tension will cause you to hit bad shots.

Step 2

Apply pressure to the club with your middle, ring and pinkie fingers on your left hand instead of your thumb and index finger if you're a right-handed golfer.

Step 3

Press down on your left thumb with the base of your right thumb. This will help maintain the grip throughout the swing.

Tips and Warnings

  • Be consistent shot after shot. Don't alter how you swing; simply change which club you are using. Stay relaxed in your stance. Being comfortable standing over the ball will help you focus and be more consistent.
