Herbs to Lower High Blood Pressure

You can't feel it. Unless you check it, you would never know you had it...until it's too late. High blood pressure is linked to a lot of serious complications such as stroke and heart disease. In essence, the high amount of blood being forced through the arteries causes damage to the walls of the arteries and can result in the thinning of artery walls--and eventual rupture. There are a variety of ways to cope with high blood pressure, including diet and medication. Others turn to herbs as a more natural way of dealing with the problem.

Garlic

A recent study done by the University of Alabama showed that a dose equal to two cloves of garlic, when injected in rats, resulted in a 75 percent reduction in blood vessel tension.

Hawthorn

Hawthorn widens coronary arteries and increases blood flow. In testing, people with high blood pressure taking hawthorn experienced a 10- to 15-point drop in their blood pressure over eight weeks. Hawthorn is also a diuretic and known to reduce blood volume in those taking it. Hawthorn can be taken as a capsule, or in liquid form when consumed as tea.

Lime Blossom

Lime blossom is one of those fairly uncomplicated herbs that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of high blood pressure. Lime blossom is simply the small flowers you find present on a lime tree. The flower can be soaked in hot water and served as a tea. A cup of lime blossom every day is said to improve high blood pressure.

Saffron

Yet another kitchen regular, saffron is a great herb for lowering blood pressure, and its application or ingestion is very simple. You can use saffron as a flavoring for food and get the medicinal benefits simply by eating it. The other method is as part of a mixture for herb tea.
