Reading glasses are usually made of glass, although some models might be plastic. If you depend on your glasses for work or to see properly, even a single scratch can make it uncomfortable and even difficult to see properly. The simplest solution is to replace the lenses, and if you have a free replacement available, this might be the best option. If not, you can try removing the scratches at home, although the results might not be 100 percent perfect.
Step 1
Place a small drop of toothpaste on a soft cloth and rub on the glasses using a circular motion. Rinse with a wet cloth and repeat until the scratch disappears.
Step 2
Use brash or silver polish to clear scratches from plastic glasses. Glass lenses should not be treated with these products, as they might affect the coating. The Glasses Crafter website recommends buffing the glasses using a soft cloth to which you have applied the polish. Finish off by buffing with a dry cloth to get rid of any liquid remaining.
Step 3
Buy a white grease pencil at any home repair or office supply store. Using a pencil, draw a circle around the scratch. Use a soft cloth to rub the area, making sure the grease from the pencil spreads over the scratch, filling in the space. Rub until the scratch becomes unnoticeable.
Step 4
Look for hydrofluoric acid through an authorized retailer. This corrosive acid is used for glass etching, so it will remove any scratches. Hydrofluoric acid is dangerous and should be handled with care, using gloves and only in a well-ventilated room or outdoors.
