While losing five lbs. may not seem like a lot of weight, five lbs. often presents a significant struggle. You can lose five lbs. in about a month though if you follow some easy and healthy techniques. All you need is determination and a positive attitude.

Healthiest Way to Lose Five Lbs.

Step 1

Lose weight slowly. You should set a goal of losing one or two pounds per week, according to Helpguide.org. Losing a lot of weight quickly usually results in a loss of muscle and water weight, rather than fat. Further, drastic drops in your weight may cause you to feel tired and sick. Losing weight slowly helps to ensure that fat is lost and keeps you feeling energized.

Step 2

Eat fewer calories. To lose weight you must eat fewer calories than the amount your body burns. For example, if your body burns 3,000 calories per day, you need to eat less than 3,000 per calories per day to lose weight. According to the MayoClinic.com, you need to burn 500 to 1,000 calories more than you consume each day to lose 1 to 2 lbs. per week. This means that if your body burns 3,000 calories, you should eat only 2,500. This creates the 500 calorie deficiency needed to lose weight.

Eat fewer calories by making healthier food choices. Cut alcohol, fried food and junk food from your diet for an easy way to cut calories. Also, add more fiber. According to Tanya Zuckerbrot, author of "The F-Factor Diet," an article on the Fitness web site, foods high in fiber fill you up quickly while having very few calories. This makes fiber-rich food a suitable alternative to junk food snacks.

Step 3

Exercise. A 45 to 60 minute walk four times per week can double your weight loss when combined with cutting calories eaten. According to the MayoClinic.com, aerobic exercise, such as walking and jogging, is one of the best ways to lose body fat. Try to incorporate exercise into your everyday life. If it is difficult to find an hour to exercise all at once, break the activity down to smaller lengths of time, multiple times per day. For example, fit in 20 minutes before work, 20 minutes at your lunch break and 20 minutes after work.
