The prostate is small gland that makes up part of the male reproductive system. Benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, is a condition in which the prostate becomes enlarged. While the prostate grows through most of a man's adult life, it does not become a problem until around age 60, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. The enlarged prostate presses against the bladders and causes problems with urination. Certain foods may help reduce the risk of BPH.
Foods High in Zinc
Foods high in zinc may prevent BPH, according to the Mayo Clinic. Zinc is an essential mineral important for immune function, wound healing, protein synthesis, DNA synthesis and cell division. Zinc deficiency leads to hypogonadism, or low testosterone levels, in males, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements. Food sources of zinc include oysters, beef shank, crab legs, fortified breakfast cereals, pork shoulder and chicken legs. Adult males need 40 mg of zinc a day, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements.
Whole Grains
Whole grains are recommended by the Austin Diagnostic Clinic in treatment for BPH. Whole grains are high in fiber, selenium, potassium and magnesium, according to the Mayo Clinic. They should be the first choice over refined and processed grains, says the Austin Diagnostic Institute. Examples of whole grains include brown rice, barley, oats, millet, popcorn, buckwheat and bulgur.
Foods High in Vitamin C
Men with high intakes of vitamin C from vegetables are at a lower risk of developing BPH, according to the Mayo Clinic. This is not true for fruit sources of vitamin C, the Mayo Clinic continues. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin required for the growth and repair of body tissue. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant, and may help slow the rate of aging by blocking damage from free radicals. Vegetable sources of vitamin C include tomatoes, broccoli, peppers, leafy greens, sweet potatoes, white potatoes and turnip greens, according to Medline Plus. Adult men need 90 mg of vitamin C a day.
