Certain things can cause your skin to age quicker than you would like. The aging process typically begins in your mid-20s, but you may not notice the signs until much later, explains the American Academy of Dermatology. Most people do develop wrinkles at some point in their lives because the skin naturally thins and dries out with age. You can help prevent wrinkles from forming early by modifying your lifestyle and habits.
Step 1
Stay out of the sun as much as possible, especially between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when rays are the strongest, recommends the American Academy of Dermatology. Ultraviolet light can lead to photoaging, a term dermatologists use to refer to wrinkles, age spots, freckles, rough skin and other aging symptoms caused by the sun. Tanning beds can lead to photoaging as well.
Step 2
Apply a sunscreen with a high sun protection factor or SPF about 20 minutes before going in the sun. Reapply sunscreen once every two hours or as needed if you perspire or get wet, recommends the American Academy of Dermatology.
Step 3
Wear a wide-brimmed hat and light-colored protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts if you must be out in the sun for prolonged periods.
Step 4
Refrain from smoking. Smoking damages the collagen and elastin fibers that allow your skin to stretch, which can lead to premature wrinkles, notes the Mayo Clinic.
Step 5
Use a light moisturizer daily, especially if you have dry skin. Hydrated skin cells are plumper and more resilient to fine lines, while dry skin is more likely to wrinkle, explains the Mayo Clinic.
Tips and Warnings
- Many moisturizers also contain sunscreen. Look for a combination product to cut down on the amount of products you need to apply to prevent wrinkles.
- The sun can damage your skin even on cloudy days. Do not skip sunscreen if you go outside during the daytime, regardless of weather.
