A good foot massage may improve blood flow to the feet, ease tight muscles, reduce foot cramping and provide comfort and relaxation, according to Drugs.com. Unfortunately, some people just don’t have confidence in their foot-massaging abilities. While giving good foot massages may not always come naturally, it is a skill that can be learned and developed.

Step 1

Study different foot massage techniques. Although the technique or techniques you’ll ultimately use depend on personal preferences, learning several different techniques increases the chance of finding one that’s a good fit. Stroking, ankle rotation, pivoting, kneading and finger walking are just some of the many foot massage techniques available, according to DrFoot.com, a website owned and operated by registered chiropodists and podiatrists.

Step 2

Practice. Like any task, perfecting a skill requires practice. If you don’t feel comfortable practicing on others yet, practice on yourself. By sitting with one ankle resting upon your knee, you can easily practice the techniques you have learned and get immediate feedback from yourself.

Step 3

Ask the person you are going to massage about their preferences. Some people may prefer a light touch, while others may prefer a more intense or vigorous massage. Matching the technique to the person’s preference often increases the person's enjoyment of the massage.

Step 4

Prepare for the massage. If you are planning to use any lotions or oils, gather them before the massage begins and warm them if needed. Have the person rest their foot comfortably on a couch, chair, bed or your lap.

Step 5

Begin massaging. Hold the foot firmly with both hands and begin rubbing the top of the foot using a firm motion with your thumbs. Move your hands up and down the foot, then begin implementing specific massage techniques. This may include stroking the top or bottom of the foot with your fingers, moving the foot to rotate the ankle, moving your thumb in circular pivoting movements, kneading the sole of the foot with your knuckles or walking your fingers down the length of the foot.

Step 6

Ask for feedback. During the massage, ask the person you are massaging if she is enjoying your technique. Ask if she would like you to press harder or softer, or if there is a specific technique she would like you to try. Adjust your technique accordingly.

Step 7

Continue until the person is ready for you to stop. If the person is enjoying the foot massage, she will want it to last as long as possible. Try not to rush, but instead take your time and enjoy the process.

Tips and Warnings

  • Some people enjoy dimming the lights, lighting candles or listening to soft music while getting their feet massaged.
  • Make sure the lotion or oil is not too hot before applying it to the person’s foot.
