Cool activities are not hard to find in San Francisco. Take on the history of Alcatraz with a challenging triathlon that begins at the infamous former prison. Play a round of golf at the over 100-year-old Presidio golf course. Climb indoor rock terrain or hang glide nearby. Become stranded for a night while camping on Angel Island State Park.
Hang Gliding
San Francisco Hang Gliding Center features a two-person hang glider for beginner tandem flights. Flights occur at Mount Tamalpais, 2,000 feet above sea level, and a 10-minute drive from San Francisco. Generally the flight goes over two miles and lasts up to 30 minutes. Make reservations in advance to avoid waiting for a spot.
Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon
The Escape from Alcatraz triathlon is held every June and participants come from around the world. The triathlon starts with a 1.5 mile swim from Alcatraz Island, continues with an 18-mile bike course at Golden Gate Park and ends with a run of eight miles through the Golden Gate national recreation area. The finish is at the marina green. Entries are limited to 2,000 competitors each year. Amateur and professional athletes compete in separate categories. To participate you must either qualify in another triathlon or register for the random lottery.
Indoor Rock Climbing
Mission Cliffs facility, located just a few block south of Franklin Park, features thousands of feet of climbing areas including a 50-foot-high lead wall. Terrains vary for experience levels with something for experts to beginners. Beginner climbing classes are offered throughout the week. Equipment can be rented in a full package which includes shoes, a harness and belay device. The facility also has fitness programs and a weight room to ensure climbers are at their best physical level.
Presidio Golf Course
Presidio golf course is part of the Golden Gate national recreation area near downtown San Francisco. The historic Presidio was an army post for over 200 years. Additions to the course came as early as 1910. The hilly terrain enhances the challenge of the 6,500-yard course. Average amount of time to finish the course is five hours and varies by factors such as weather. The public course is open everyday during daylight hours.
Angel Island State Park
Angel Island state park at night is an exciting experience for campers. The island is cut off from San Francisco each night as ferry service is stopped. San Francisco's skyline can be seen in the distance. The only way to reach the campsites is by backpacking. There are four campsites, including one designated for kayakers. Kayaks cannot be left in the water overnight. Bike rentals are not available during the winter season. Skateboards and scooters are prohibited at all times.
