A shaving brush is a short, stout brush composed of a set of bristles and a thick handle. You hold the handle and apply shaving soap to your face with the bristles. Badger hair is typically used to create the bristles of a shaving brush, an implement that originated in the 1700s. Aside from rinsing with water after each use, shaving brushes only require thorough cleaning every few months.
Step 1
Place a few spoonfuls of powdered borax into a non-reactive mixing bowl made from plastic, ceramic or wood. Borax is a chemical compound of sodium borate, and is commonly used as a laundry additive.
Step 2
Add a small amount of water to the borax and stir until a thick paste forms. If the cleaning mixture is too runny, add a bit more borax. The paste needs to be thick enough to stay on the shaving brush.
Step 3
Use your hands to apply the paste to your shaving brush. Massage the paste throughout the bristles, gently to avoid disturbing the natural shape of the badger hair. Wear latex or rubber gloves to protect your skin from becoming irritated from the borax.
Step 4
Set your shaving brush in a safe place where children and animals cannot accidentally harm your brush or themselves. Let the borax paste penetrate the shaving brush for several hours. The English Shaving Company suggests leaving your brush overnight.
Step 5
Rinse the cleansing paste out of your shaving brush with warm water. Gently squeeze out the excess water and allow your brush to air-dry on a towel.
