The steam room is a centuries-old facility that remains popular in pools, fitness facilities and bathhouses. The steam room usually consists of a small room with the walls, floor and ceiling lined with tile, and a steam generator. The steam room is a popular tool for stress relief and muscle relaxation. Steam can even be used to treat respiratory conditions such as asthma. Use some easy steps to make the most out of your next steam room visit.
Step 1
Take a shower. Before you even enter the steam room, take a brief shower to make sure your skin is clean. Enter the steam room free of body odor and perfumes to be considerate to other users, as well as to prevent skin irritation.
Step 2
Check the temperature. Most steam rooms have some sort of thermometer either on the inside or just outside. The steam bath should be between 110 and 116 degrees. Too hot, and the steam room may be uncomfortable. To cool, and the positive effects are diminished. If the steam room is too hot, turn off the steam generator until it cools. If the steam room is too cool, turn the steam generator up if possible, and make sure the door is closed properly.
Step 3
Sit on a towel. Always make sure to bring a towel to sit on to prevent the transmission of bacteria or viruses. Placing a barrier between you and the tile will protect you, as well as your fellow users.
Step 4
Limit yourself to 15 to 20 minutes per session. Don’t exceed 20 minutes, especially if you are new to the steam room. Following the session, cool off with cool air or a cool shower. If you would like to use the steam room for multiple sessions, make sure you cool off between each session.
Tips and Warnings
- If allowed at your facility, spray some eucalyptus oil into the steam room. Eucalyptus oil clears the sinuses and provides a refreshing scent.
- If you have high blood pressure, a heart condition or sensitivity to heat, see your doctor before using the steam room.
