If you feel uncomfortable showing off your nails, you might suffer from weak, brittle nails that are discolored or have ridges. Improving the health of your nails can help prevent bacterial infections, boost the condition of the nail bed and change how you feel about showing off your nails. Small changes to your daily routine and current nail care can turn your weak nails into strong, resilient ones that you enjoy showing off.

Step 1

Halt destructive nail habits. According to the Mayo Clinic, biting your nails, pulling off hangnails and using your nails to pick and pry at objects can cause damage. Damaged nails can become infected and brittle.

Step 2

Wear gloves when you clean with chemicals, wash the dishes or perform yard work to protect your nails. Wear a second pair of cotton gloves when performing tasks that can cause your hands to become sweaty.

Step 3

Clean and moisturize your nails regularly. Wash your hands with antibacterial soap and dry them thoroughly. Apply moisturizing lotion to your nails after your hands have been wet and after using nail-polish remover. According to the Mayo Clinic, your nails require moisture just like your skin does.

Step 4

Cut and shape your nails regularly. Shorter nails are less likely to become damaged or broken, says Dr. Paul Kechijian, chief of the nail section at New York University Medical Center, in an article on MotherNature.com. Trim your nails after showering or soaking your nails to soften the tissue.

Step 5

Apply nail polish to lock in moisture. Use clear or nail-hardening polish that strengthens nails. Avoid using polish that contains toluene sulfonamide or formaldehyde, according to the Mayo Clinic. These chemicals can cause irritation.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid using nail-polish remover more than twice a month, as it is hard on your nails.

Things You'll Need
