Clean eating is a practical way of providing your body with the essential elements of healthy nutrition: fresh vegetables and fruit, lean proteins and whole grains. The concept of eating clean involves eating portion-controlled meals at regular intervals throughout the day, starting with breakfast. This practice originated in the modern day sport of bodybuilding. Competitive athletes in pursuit of a well-sculpted physique followed a disciplined eating plan. According to Tosca Reno, author of the Eat-Clean Diet series, clean eating is the preferred way to eat. Reno recommends that more men get into the habit of eating clean, which has energy-producing, body-building benefits.

Step 1

Eat every three hours, for a total of six small meals per day. Whether you're at the office or on-the-go, the ability to tackle the demands of a busy day requires energy. Forget those strict diets you may have heard your girlfriend or mother talk about. By eating clean, you can eat more, retain muscle and energy and never go hungry. Better yet, you don't even have to think about counting a carb or calorie. The simple practice of eating every three hours will increase your metabolism, which means food will break down faster and release nutrients into the body to sustain high energy levels over the course of the day.

Step 2

Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. Eating more doesn't mean grabbing your favorite bag of potato chips and soda as a snack and gorging on a steak and potatoes at dinner time. Eating clean requires replacing low-quality "junk" foods with better-quality foods. Opt for grilled instead of fried, and fresh instead of processed. Vegetables, fruit and whole grains are complex carbohydrates, which means these foods are high in fiber; this improves digestion and increases energy. Proteins such as eggs and beans, and lean meats such as fish, are the building blocks of the muscle tissue. According to Robert Kennedy and Tosca Reno, authors of the Eat-Clean Diet For Men, the Eat-Clean nutrition formula is to combine foods containing complex carbohydrates with lean proteins, and to keep portions the size of a cupped hand.

Step 3

Drink your water. It is impossible to eat clean without drinking clean. Water makes up approximately 60 percent of your body weight. It is the necessary component of every function of the body. According to the Mayo Clinic, men should drink approximately 3 L of total beverages per day. The Clean Diet For Men suggests 500 mL of water with each small meal.
