Whether it’s the buzzing of hydroplanes or the allure of historic structures, Madison, Indiana draws a variety of visitors every year. Among the attractions in this area is Clifty Falls State Park, home to the falls for which it is named and a host of other features for the active guest.

History of Clifty Falls State Park

During the Ice Age, the Clifty Creek created the falls on its way to the Ohio River. In 1852, the Madison and Indianapolis Railroad had to abandon construction in the area due to bankruptcy, leaving the groundwork for the park’s trails. In 1920, Clifty Falls State Park opened with 614 acres. With the acquisition of land from the Madison State Hospital in 1965, the park grew to 1,416 acres.

For the Active and Inquisitive

Clifty Falls offers a variety of activities for active and inquisitive visitors. The park boasts more than 12 miles of hiking trails, swimming facilities and tennis courts. An interpretive naturalist program offers an assortment of learning opportunities for those who are interested in the natural world of the park. Schedules for these opportunities are available at the park’s office.

Clifty Canyon Nature Preserve

The park is also home to the 179-acre Clifty Falls Canyon Preserve, which encompasses the falls and the majority of Clifty Creek. The bulk of the park’s hiking trails run through the preserve. The various streams that run through the preserve have cut into the Ordovician rock that abounds in the park, exposing numerous fossils.

Park Accommodations

Visitors to the park may relax in a range of accommodations. Clifty Inn, the park’s lodge, provides guests with modern rooms and suites overlooking the Ohio River and the park. The restaurant at the inn serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and is open to the public. Campers can enjoy camping facilities that range from primitive tent sites to electric sites, which are able to accommodate RVs. Restrooms and showers are available. The majority of electric sites can accommodate RVs and trailers up to 40 feet in length, while a select few have a length restriction of 50 feet.

Other Activities in the Madison Area

Though Clifty Falls is the only state park in Madison, the area offers other activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Madison’s 1.4-mile Heritage Trail is a paved trail running from the current Madison State Hospital to Madison’s riverfront, allowing for walking, jogging, biking and in-line skating. Operated by Madison’s Parks and Recreation Department, Sunrise Golf Course is a public, 18-hole, par 72 course situated on 160 acres. The course is open for daily play for a fee, and season passes and cart rentals are available.
