Peppermint oil has been used in medicine and other health-related products for centuries. Though scientific evidence has not thoroughly proven its benefits, peppermint can also be used to care for your hair and scalp. It is safe for most adults but has the potential to cause an allergic reaction. Consult a physician before you begin using it, and apply a small amount to your skin to test for any allergic reactions.

Oil Reduction

Peppermint oil acts as an astringent, which is a substance that tightens tissue and constricts blood flow. Peppermint oil cools the scalp and provides a tingling sensation. When applied to the skin or scalp, an astringent works to reduce any excess oil. An oily scalp can lead to greasy hair, and the peppermint helps to regulate your scalp’s production of oil and eliminate the grease. With less grease on your scalp, your hair will have more body and be less likely to fall flat.

Dry Scalp Relief

If you don’t have oily hair, you can still use peppermint oil. Astringents help to normalize both dry and oily scalps. According to the University of Maryland’s Medical Center, peppermint oil can soothe skin irritations and relieve pain and itching. This makes it ideal for those who have dry or irritated scalps, as it can help fight dandruff and eliminate the itching associated with this and other scalp conditions. It works to moisturize both the scalp and hair and can also be used as a conditioner.

Fragrance

According to Northwestern Health Sciences University, peppermint in its essential oil form can be used to flavor foods and can also be used as a fragrance. Applied to your hair and scalp, the oil will give your hair a pleasant and fresh scent that can last throughout the day. To achieve this, you should purchase the essential oil from an aromatherapy shop or specialty food store. You must dilute the peppermint before applying it by adding two drops of it to four ounces of water, since it can cause a burning sensation when applied on its own. You can put the water and oil mixture into a spray bottle for easy application, and then mist it onto both your hair and scalp to add fragrance.
