Holistic Remedies for Scabies

Scabies is a skin disease that is caused by microscopic, eight-legged mites that burrow into your skin and lay eggs. The skin becomes red and excessively itchy and a rash will develop between the fingers and toes as well as in the hollow of the elbows, on the arms or even on the buttocks, says natural-homeremedies.com. Scabies is highly contagious and care needs to be taken if you are infected. There are some natural treatments to try at home, but it is recommended that a doctor be consulted before trying them.

Margosa Tree Leaves

Natural-homeremedies.com and naturalcosmeticsupplies.com states that the leaves of the margosa tree are medicinal and can kill the mites associated with scabies. Boil the leaves in water, make them into a paste and apply to the affected area. You can also take cotton and soak it in the boiled water to clean or cover the area, as well.

Tea Tree Oil

Beauty-cosmetic-guide.com notes that tea tree oil is used to treat scabies because of its natural antifungal, antiviral, anti-infection and antibacterial capabilities. It helps to soothe and disinfect by penetrating into the lower layers of the skin. Tea tree oil has anti-inflammatory, pain-killing and wound-healing qualities. The website suggests adding a few drops to the affected areas once in the morning and once at night. It also warns that tea tree oil can cause irritation in sensitive people. If there is no improvement in 10 days, please consult a doctor.

Walnuts

Mothernature.com says that walnuts are good for dealing with scabies because they contain a chemical called juglone, which is found in the green shucks of walnuts and has fungicidal and antibiotic properties. Dr. Albert Leung, a natural product pharmacist and consultant on mothernature.com, recommends making a wash by taking a few cracked walnut shell pieces, combining them with a cup of water, and boiling the mixture until half the water evaporates. Let it cool. Apply the remaining water liberally onto the skin. For a more concentrated solution, cover a few whole walnuts with water and boil until half the water is gone.

Heat

Natural-homeremedies.com says that because mites multiply by laying eggs onto your skin, they can easily be transferred to clothing. The clothes should be soaked in hot water with a disinfectant, washed separately, and ironed. The heat from the water and iron will help kill the mites and eggs. They also suggest taking a shower as hot as you can stand and not soaking in a tub because of the risk of infecting the tub with mites, and causing a relapse.
