The right sized saddle can have a dramatic effect on both you and your horse. The website Local Riding.com compares an ill-fitting saddle to a backpack that is too heavy or shoes that are too small. Because the saddle size is critical, one of the best methods for purchasing a new saddle is by measuring the old one. Saddle seat is the distance between the pommel and the stitching on the seat back. Proper measurement of the saddle seat should be one consideration when determining the right size saddle for you.

Step 1

Set your saddle up on a post or saddle rack. Check that the pommel and back of the seat are parallel. The pommel is the raised area at the front of the saddle.

Step 2

Place the end of a tape measure on the front of the base of the pommel. The base of the pommel will be close to the same height as the back of the seat.

Step 3

Stretch the measuring tape across the saddle to the stitching on the back of the seat. Keep the tape level even if it means holding it above the seat back. This number will be the saddle seat size.
