Resveratrol is a chemical compound, trans-3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene, that occurs naturally in grape skins and is a key ingredient in red wine. Theories abound that resveratrol may be the chemical answer to life extension.
Potential Benefits
Animal studies performed on mice have demonstrated that resveratrol may decrease cancerous tumor progression, prevent obesity and diabetes, lower LDL cholesterol, and protect against cardiovascular damage.
Sources
Resveratrol is primarily found in red wine, grape skins, blueberries, cranberries and peanuts. Since red wine is fermented longer than white wine, red wine contains more resveratrol.
Considerations
There have been no studies comparing the health benefits of resveratrol-containing foods with the health benefits of red wine consumption.
Warnings
While resveratrol may possess health benefits, consumption of red wine or any alcoholic beverage may also pose health risks to the liver and physical dependence.
Future
While some companies are selling resveratrol supplements, there have been no clinical studies on humans to demonstrate its health benefits or potential adverse effects in humans.
