State Parks Near San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio, Texas is a popular destination for those visiting the southern regions of Texas. This sprawling desert town has plenty to offer, including several local state parks providing countless opportunities for outdoor recreation and activities. Whether you want to get fit while biking the extensive hill country or ride on horseback on the banks of a 26,000-acre reservoir, the state parks near San Antonio provide many opportunities to get your daily workout in the midst of beautiful landscapes.

Regions

A few parks are available within just a few minutes’ drive from downtown San Antonio. Other parks are located within 20 miles of the outer loop 410. Several parks are located on the outskirts of the San Antonio area, though not over 60 miles from the downtown area, including the Hill Country State Park to the far west and the Blanco State Park to the north.

Activities

Some state parks in the San Antonio area include recreational activities for those used to modern amenities, including the Lockhart State Park with its swimming pool and nine-hole course for golfers. Other parks, such as the Honey Creek State Natural Area or the Blanco State Park, boast the natural attraction of miles of rivers for guests to enjoy tubing or kayaking. Visitors to the Palmetto State Park can enjoy canoeing along the San Marcos River. The Government Canyon State Natural Area offers distinctive landscapes to enjoy while running, hiking or biking the miles of trails through prairies and canyons.

Historical Attractions

Those with more of an interest in historical sites and buildings can find plenty to see while enjoying outdoor activities at parks like the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historical Site. There, guests can board a bus after a morning of walking the grounds or fishing for a tour of the former president’s ranch. The Sebastopol House, located in Seguin on the east side of San Antonio, offers visitors a chance to see historical nineteenth-century architecture. Two other options are located minutes from anywhere in downtown San Antonio: the Mission Trail and the Casa Navarro State Historic Site.

Camping

Most parks are only open during the day for activities such as biking and hiking, but a few state parks in the San Antonio area offer areas where guests can camp overnight. The Hill Country State Natural Area, offering miles of horse-riding trails, has several campsites available nightly. Lodges are also available. The Lockhart State Park offers camping, and the Palmetto State Park has grounds to facilitate overnight campers as well.

Considerations

Some state parks require a fee for entrance to the facility, and many of the guided activities at the historical sites require an additional fee. Guests should call the state park of choice before visiting to make sure they are aware of all potential charges. A pass is available for purchase that provides entrance to over 90 of Texas’s state parks and discounts on several of the attractions at those parks.
