As you face challenges throughout life, you may feel on the top of the world one day and at the bottom of the barrel another day. If you've recently been denied for a job promotion, gotten a bad haircut or had a fight with a loved one, your self-esteem may be lower than usual. Many people are harder on themselves than they would be on a stranger, says psychotherapist Barton Goldsmith, Ph.D. in an article in "Psychology Today." Regain your confidence by treating yourself with respect.
Step 1
Exercise reguarly. Exercising will release serotonin in the body, which may raise your mood and make you feel better about yourself, says Susan Schenkel, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Step 2
Reward yourself for a job well done. Rather than beating yourself up for not finishing an entire project, congratulate yourself for each step of the project you complete, recommends psychotherapist Eleta Greene, Ph.D.
Step 3
Trust yourself and your worth, says Dr. Goldsmith. Instead of assuming you have nothing to offer, remember that you are an asset to your family and friends, and that they enjoy your company because you are a wonderful person. Rather than doubting your contributions, trust that you are vital to the well being of your loved ones.
Step 4
Take a class. If your lack of education is making you feel inadequate, head to a local college to take a few classes. Focus on improving your education a couple of credits at a time, rather than crowding your schedule with too many classes at once.
Step 5
Speak to yourself the way you would treat a good friend, says Dr. Greene. Each time you look in the mirror, pick out one thing you love about your appearance, like your shiny hair or your new sweater.
Tips and Warnings
- Treat yourself to small luxuries throughout the week, like a bubble bath or a pedicure.
- If you are feeling depressed, consult a psychologist.
