If you enjoy cycling as a form of exercise, but live in a northern climate and are unable to enjoy your hobby year-round, there is one way you can keep pedaling without emptying your bank account. Turning your outdoor bike into a stationary bike is easy to do and costs much less than a gym membership or manufactured stationary bike.
Step 1
Purchase a stationary trainer or roller stand. A trainer will clamp the bike by the rear drop outs and leave the front wheel on, while a roller will simply raise the entire bike off the floor. A trainer is less likely to stress your frame, but with a roller you will pedal much more smoothly.
Step 2
Find space in your house or garage for your bike to be set up. You don't need a lot of space, but enough to accommodate the bike with some room to spare all around.
Step 3
Assemble your bike stand, then secure your bike in it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure clamps are tightened well to prevent it from falling off when in use.
Step 4
Inspect the bike and walk all the way around to be certain it is even and secured properly. If there seems to be any unevenness at all, take it apart and do it over. Move the bike around from side to side to mimic the action of you riding. It will be worth the initial effort to have the bike operate smoothly; you'll quickly tire of difficult pedaling or uneven balance.
