A bicycle rider applies handlebar tape to his handlebars to increase his comfort level, and provide a bit of traction for his hands. Handlebar tape comes in adhesive and nonadhesive versions, and must be stretched when you wrap your handlebars to avoid wrinkling. Applying handlebar tape is easy to do with a little practice.

Step 1

Remove the old handlebar tape from your handlebars. Scrape any residue off with a utility knife. Be careful not to damage brake cables. Secure brake cables and anything else that the handlebar tape will cover with electrical tape before you begin wrapping.

Step 2

Choose a side, and start on the underside of the end of the handlebar. If you are using an adhesive wrap, let half the width of the tape hang off the end of the handlebar.

Step 3

Overlap one-third to one-half of the tape's width as you wrap it around the bar. Stretch the tape as you wrap it, and watch as it goes all the way around to avoid leaving gaps on the side you can't see. Stop wrapping when you reach the brake lever.

Step 4

Place a small piece of rectangular tape around the brake lever. Some handlebar wrapping kits come with small pieces for this purpose. Continue wrapping around the small piece after you apply it, and then wrap it around the brake lever, stretching the tape as you go.

Step 5

Stop wrapping the tape about 1 1/2 inches from the stem of the bars. Use a small piece of electrical tape to secure the inside edge of the handlebar tape. Push the tape that was hanging over the outside of the bar into the hole, and then insert the end plug. Repeat the procedure on the other side.

Tips and Warnings

  • Depending on how you hold the handlebars, you will want to wrap one side clockwise and one counter-clockwise, so you will tighten tape naturally as you ride. Picture yourself holding the bars and notice how your hands move. Then wrap them accordingly.
