Los Angeles is a place many young people would love to see. Finding appropriate, healthy activities is easy in a city that spreads from the Pacific Coast across spacious valleys and up in to hills and mountains. Try some of these ways to see some famous sights in Los Angeles while being active.
The Beach Life
Los Angeles County maintains 20 miles of multi-use pathway on the Pacific coastline. The beach communities of Venice and Santa Monica are great locations for people watching. You can rent a bicycle or skates from one of many vendors on the commercial strip in either Venice or Santa Monica, and ride, walk or run along the paved path. Make sure to check out muscle beach in Venice where famous competitive bodybuilders workout on the beach. Take in the attractions on the Santa Monica Pier. Or take advantage of the ocean and take a swim.
The Hollywood Sign
The Hollywood Sign Trust is an organization that raises money to maintain the iconic Hollywood sign on Mount Olympus. Check with the Sign Trust for the several places to get a good photo of the sign. Try a hike around the Hollywood dog walk in the Hollywood hills, then walk over to Lake Hollywood to see the sign. If you are really looking for a workout, try riding a bike up in to the hills to the dog walk. Going all the way up to the sign on foot or by car is prohibited.
Griffith Park Observatory
On the top of Mount Hollywood in Los Angeles’ 4,000-acre Griffith Park you will find one of the city’s most beloved buildings, the Griffith Park Observatory. A leading astronomy location, the observatory offers shows throughout the day. The hiking paths leading up toward it and the grounds around it offer extraordinary views of the city.
Amusement Parks
One way to stay in motion all day and into the night is to see one of Southern California’s numerous amusement parks. You can find Magic Mountain, Knott’s Berry Farm, Disneyland and Universal Studios all in the Los Angeles area.
Hike the Santa Monica Mountains
Within the boundaries of Los Angeles you will find 60,000 acres known as the Santa Monica Mountains. Maintained by the Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy, the mountains contain paths of various lengths and difficulty levels for walking, running and mountain biking. Many of the paths offer spectacular views of the city and the Pacific Ocean. There are several options for visitors to enter the land maintained by the Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy, depending on where you are staying. Check with the conservancy for maps and specifics on particular trails.
Eat at the Farmer's Market
The Farmer’s Market in Los Angeles dates to 1934 when farmers would pull up their trucks to sell produce. Today it’s a great place to sample all kinds of healthy eating from various vendors from different cultures while sitting in the great Los Angeles sunshine. At meal times it can be a great place to people watch as well.
