Having self-confidence, belief in yourself, is a key factor in becoming successful. When you believe you can do something, others are more likely to believe it as well. When you believe you can control your life, you take responsibility for your actions and achieve what you set out to achieve. This ultimately makes you more attractive in both social situations and to potential employers. However, self-confidence is not something that comes naturally for everyone. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to build your self-confidence and have others believe in you as well.

Step 1

Celebrate your strengths. Write a list of what you and your friends or coworkers see as your most positive qualities. Make another list of what you have accomplished in your life. Focus on your achievements rather than your failures. If you still can't help but think about how you ultimately failed at something, then focus on what you did do right and think about how you could correct it for next time

Step 2

Set goals. Make your first goals small and easily achievable. Once you have small successes, you will gain the confidence to tackle bigger obstacles. You may want to set one goal a week. According to Conquering Stress, this will give your week structure, and give you clarity and purpose. Your goals could include work, family, social or personal gains. Don't be afraid to reward yourself after achieving your goals. Be sure to keep your goals reasonable, however; if you aim too high, you will not know the success of reaching your goals.

Step 3

Face your fears. Once you have conquered some of your smaller goals, tackle the obstacles you have avoided in the past. Facing your fears will boost your self-confidence and improve your self-esteem.

Step 4

Be positive. Self-deprecation can be seen as a lack of self-esteem. If you're constantly criticizing yourself, others will begin to see you in the same way. Learn to quash any negative thoughts that pop into your brain. Learn to accept constructive criticism from others without letting it bring you down.

Step 5

Look as if you believe in yourself. Stand tall--your posture and body language say a lot about how you feel about yourself, and other people will respond to that. Look people in the eye when talking, and keep your head up and your shoulders back. If necessary, give yourself a makeover, including a haircut or wardrobe overhaul. If you feel like you look good and look like you feel good, people will be more likely to treat you with respect.
