The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that one in every five Americans suffer from a mental disorder such as depression. Depression can be triggered from a traumatic event such as a death, relationship loss or job loss. It can also be a lifelong problem that occurs throughout someone’s life. Learning ways to overcome your depression will help you to get the help you need and lead a more fulfilling and productive life.

Medication

The Helpguide website explains that many medical experts state that a contributing factor that leads to depression could be due to low levels of serotonin in the brain. Some medications, called SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are designed to stimulate serotonin activity in the brain. Common brand names for these medications include Celexa, Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro and Luvox. These medications can help you with your depression by regulating your mood levels, give you mental clarity and help you deal with pain better. Most anti-depressants have side effects which affect each person differently. Side effects may include nausea, fatigue, GI problems, headaches, weight gain and insomnia. Medication should be prescribed to you by your doctor. He may also recommend healthy lifestyle changes along with behavioral or cognitive therapy.

Weight Control

If you are overweight, you could also be suffering from depression. The U.S. National Library of Medicine states that depression can be linked to being overweight and having a poor self image. Being overweight also puts you at risk for health related complications such as heart disease and diabetes; this can also lead to depression. Controlling your weight by exercising and following a low fat diet plan will help you feel better about yourself and improve your health. Exercising can also reduce stress and anxiety levels; another contributing factor that can lead to depression. The Cleveland Clinic recommends getting up to 30 to 60 minutes of exercise daily, five days a week.

Therapy

If you are unable to control your depression with medication, a change in diet or exercise, you may need to seek professional help. A good start is to visit your family physician. She will be able to perform a physical evaluation which may include additional testing such as blood work to rule out any type of underlying medical illness or condition. If she determines you may suffer from depression or feels that your current anti-depressant isn’t working, she may refer you to a therapist for further evaluation and treatment. Psychology Information Online states that a licensed therapist who specializes in supportive counseling and behavioral therapy to discuss underlying issues, combined with cognitive therapy will help you set realistic life goals and overcome problems with a realistic approach. If you suffer from anxiety or a mental disorder, a therapist can help you identify your weakness and give you coping mechanisms to help you deal with your depression effectively in a positive manner.
