A head injury is any trauma that injures the brain, skull or scalp. Anything from a minor bump on the head, to a serious brain injury is classified as a head injury. FamilyDoctor.org says that there are four types of head injuries and these include a contusion; a skull fracture; a hematoma, which is a bleeding in the brain that leads to blood clot; and a concussion. According to MayoClinic.com, only severe brain injuries require any treatment, which may include diuretics and other drugs, therapy and surgery.
Diuretics and Other Drugs
According to MayoClinic.com, diuretics, anti-seizure drugs and coma-inducing drugs may be used for the treatment of severe brain injuries. Diuretics are administered intravenously and help reduce the amount of fluid in the tissue and increase urine output. Anti-seizure drugs are given for those with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury since they are at a higher risk of getting a seizure. Coma-inducing drugs are used to hasten the healing process since a comatose brain requires less oxygen to function.
Therapy
According to MayoClinic.com, therapy is a treatment option that is used for head injuries. If the brain injury is significant, an individual may require rehabilitation to learn basic skills such as walking and talking. The type of therapy will vary from one to the other person and usually depends on the part of the brain that was injured and the severity of the injury.
Surgery
According to MayoClinic.com, surgery can be used for the treatment of brain injuries. Before a surgeon performs brain surgery, a part of the scalp is shaved. This is followed by cutting a flap of skin which is then folded back. The surgeon then removes a section of the skull and performs the surgery on the brain. Surgery may involve removing the clotted blood in case of a hematoma. Most skull fractures heal by themselves. However, when a portion of the skull presses into the brain, skull fracture may need to be repaired. Sometimes, the pressure inside the skull cannot be controlled. In such cases, an opening is created in the skull and left open till the time the swelling subsides.
