Tackling in football looks simpler than it is. Girls looking to improve their success at stopping an opponent need to follow the fundamentals of tackling. One mistake can spring a ball carrier loose, make the would-be tackler look bad or even cause an injury. Girls who practice proper tackling techniques will more consistently and safely stymie opposing players and contribute to the success of the team.

Proper Stance

When closing in for a tackle, "break down" your stance and get in the proper tackling position. To accomplish this, says Maury Waugh, a longtime linebacker coach for Wayne State University, bend your knees, spread your feet a shoulder-width apart and keep your elbows in tight. Assume a bulled-neck position and puff out your chest. You must practice the footwork of breaking down and the bending of the knees consistently to see results.

Wrap Up

Wrapping up your opponent is one tackling technique that keeps the player from getting away. Coachingyouthfootball.com compares the wrap-up concept to hugging. Wrap your arms as far around the ball carrier as possible and squeeze as hard as you can until the ball carrier begins to topple.

Grab Something

Tackling with a giant hug may not be sufficient for some girls to take down an opponent. Another tactic is to grab on to anything that can be grabbed, even a shoelace. You can grab the ball carrier's ankle, belt or any part of her jersey. Hanging on to any piece of the ball carrier's equipment, except for the face mask, is a legal maneuver and guarantees the player won't escape.

Go for the Ball

A ball carrier may try to block a tackler using her off hand, which leaves the ball exposed. A tackler can seize the opportunity to make a key play by knocking the ball loose and forcing a fumble. Before going for the ball, however, go for the player. Tackling is the first priority, so break down your stance and wrap up the player before trying to cause a fumble. But if the opportunity arises, take full advantage and swat at the ball.
