According to "Good Housekeeping" magazine, preventing wrinkles around the mouth is difficult. Most of the lines are caused by natural movements of your lips and normal facial expressions such as laughing, talking and eating. AllForWomen.com points out that wrinkles around the mouth are more common after you turn 40, so starting prevention early is important.
Step 1
Stop smoking. According to the Mayo Clinic, smoking causes blood vessels on the skin to narrow. This impairs oxygen flow, causing the skin to age faster. Some of the chemicals in cigarettes also affect the elasticity and strength of your skin. As skin weakens and production of collagen and elastin diminish, more wrinkles form.
Step 2
Apply sunscreen to the skin around your mouth, bottom of your nose and cheeks. Over it, apply a moisturizer that contains collagen or ingredients that plump lines, such as hyaluronic acid. You can also try anti-wrinkle creams or treatments.
Step 3
Avoid repetitive movements such as turning down the corners of your mouth. According to NBC, drinking directly from bottles or using a straw can also cause wrinkles around the mouth, as the movement is similar to the one you make when smoking.
Step 4
Give up gum chewing. In an article for "The Telegraph," dermatologist Dr. Joel Schlessinger says chewing gum overworks certain muscles and increases wrinkles around the mouth. Because chewing gum breaks down support tissue, it causes skin to age faster and speeds up the appearance of folds on the sides of the mouth and lips.
