Playing badminton is an enjoyable way to spend time outdoors and get some exercise. A home badminton court provides a fun activity for a family gathering or neighborhood block party. Setting up a badminton net takes a little bit of time and a lot of measuring, so give yourself time before an event to get your court in working order. You can find complete badminton sets that include nets and poles at sporting good stores.
Step 1
Find an ideal location for your badminton net. The ClearLead website states a concrete surface is best for playing badminton, but you can also set up your net on a dirt or grass court. To set up a singles court, you'll need an area that is 17 feet by 44 feet. For a doubles court, the area should be 20 feet by 44 feet. Make sure the ground is free of stumps and you have 5 feet of extra space on all sides of the court to avoid running into any obstacles.
Step 2
Lay your poles on either side of your court. You can purchase portable badminton poles at sporting goods stores. Portable poles make it easier to set up and take down your badminton net. With portable poles for your net, you don't have to bother with digging holes or pouring concrete to set up your net.
Step 3
Unroll your badminton net and lay it between the poles. Tie the ends of the net securely to each of the poles.
Step 4
Stand the poles up and erect your net. Make sure the poles are moved far enough apart that the badminton net is fully extended. Also ensure the net bisects your court evenly into two sides. Make sure that the top of the net is 5 feet above the ground at the center.
Step 5
Use spray paint or chalk to mark the boundaries of your badminton court. Having these boundaries clearly marked will make it easy to tell when the shuttlecock is in or out of play.
Step 6
Use the chalk or paint to mark service lines. These lines show players where they need to stand when serving the shuttlecock. For singles games, the lines should be 6 1/2 feet behind the net. For doubles games, mark the service lines 2 1/2 feet behind the boundary line.
Tips and Warnings
- Some badminton nets come with stakes that must be pounded into the ground to erect the net. To do this, you'll need a mallet. Set up remains the same, just use the mallet to hammer the edges of your net securely into the ground.
