Open MRI offers a clear picture of the soft-tissue structures of the human body. These images are not affected by bones and can be taken from any angle or direction. Some of the common open MRI procedures include scans of blood vessels, the brain, the spine, the abdomen and the reproductive systems. Stand up MRI scanners also allow doctors to stretch, rotate, or bend patients to study painful positions. They also help doctors to understand the effects of weight on the body. This makes it much easier to find causes of pain than more traditional MRI scanners. However, a drawback some older open MRI scanners have is that the quality of the image they can render is not as good as those of traditional scanners.
Magnetic Resonance Angiography
An open MRI scan can be performed for many different reasons. For example, these scans can be done to assess the rate at which the brain is developing in a premature infant. A brain MRI can also help doctor to diagnose many illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s, or multiple sclerosis. With the help of this tool, it is possible to find out if there is any bleeding in the brains after an accident, or if the patient suffers from hydrocephalus. Naturally, an open brain MRI will also show any possible brain tumors.
Open MRI of the Brain
Magnetic resonance angiography is an MRI study of blood vessels. Such scans are used to assess abnormalities in blood vessel. Typically, a patient going through blood vessel MRI has had a stroke or has a history of such conditions as heart disease, or abnormal expansion of the wall of a blood vessel. An MRI of the blood vessels can also reveal if the patient has a calcium and fatty deposit in the carotid arteries of the neck.
MRI of the Reproductive Systems
An open MRI scan of the reproductive system can be used to scan such structures as the uterus, the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, or the prostate. These scans can be used to find out why the patient is suffering from infertility. Open MRI scans can also be used to identify cancer or tumors in the reproductive systems. Another use for open MRI scans lies in their ability to find out whether organs are of normal size. The prostate, for example, if enlarged, can easily be seen with an open MRI scanner. Also, Infections in the reproductive system can also be detected using these scans.
