How Can I Detox My Body of Drugs?

The safest way to detoxify yourself from drugs is to sign yourself into a detoxification center. Seizures may occur with some forms of drug withdrawal, depending on the type of drugs you have used, the American Academy of Family Physicians indicates. Admission into a detoxification center will include supportive care on a daily basis, which you would not receive on the outside. Detoxification remains both a physical and a psychological reform of the body, whether you abused alcohol, narcotics or other drugs.

Step 1

Check yourself into a detoxification center. Inpatient therapy consists of a team of experts who work with you regarding the type of drugs you have abused. Your level and form of drug abuse will undergo a scoring assessment and medication regimen; this will help reduce withdrawal symptoms and prevent seizures. Doctors will recommend a course of treatment based on their diagnoses. Inpatient psychiatric staff members will assist with your psychological needs as well as with any medication you may need. Medications may be required on a regular basis.

Step 2

Follow the plan created by your doctor, and participate in any treatments required. The doctor may place you in individual or group therapy as well as support groups while inside the facility. Along with undergoing the actual physical detoxification of getting the drugs out of your system, you will learn techniques for staying away from drugs upon your release. Only after you go through the treatments will the doctor recommend release and outpatient services. Patients who do not meet the criteria for such placement will remain as inpatients.

The assessment by a doctor will determine whether or not you may be released. He will consider safety issues such as whether you pose a danger to yourself or other people. He will also consider the possibility you may resume abusing drugs.

Step 3

Attend outpatient services such as counseling and support group meetings following your detoxification. Use what you have learned to refrain from drug abuse. Attend support groups such as Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous. Such support may be needed on a daily basis during recovery.
