Home Remedy for Shingles Pain

Shingles are caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same one that causes chickenpox, a fairly common childhood virus. The virus is capable of sitting dormant in the nerves for years, only to rear its ugly head in the form of a painful rash that wraps around the middle of the back, chest and breast. Shingles can also occasionally affect other areas of the body such as the face, neck and scalp. Shingles is most commonly treated through medication, but there are things you can do at home to alleviate shingles pain.

Over-the-counter Pain Relievers

Perhaps the simplest way to treat the pain is through the use of over-the-counter pain relievers. According to Jules Altman, M.D., a private practitioner in Warren, Michigan, and clinical professor of dermatology at Wayne State University, acetaminophen may be best for rash and blisters that are trying to heal.

Calamine Liniment

Calamine is used to relieve all types of pain and itching associated with bites, burns and rashes. It's also a good way to relieve the pain of shingles. To make the liniment, take 5 oz. of calamine and add it to 1 oz. of isopropyl alcohol, a drop of phenol and a drop of menthol. The phenol can make the mixture too hot, the menthol can make it too cool. You'll want to adjust the amount of each depending on how the liniment feels on the rash. You can also dilute the liniment with water. Once the liniment is prepared, apply it to the shingles as often as you need. When the blisters have dried up and scabbed over, stop using the liniment and switch to a lotion that contains menthol and phenol.

Cool Dressing

For especially severe pain, you can wet a towel or large bandage in very cold water and apply it directly to the rash. The colder the dressing you are applying, the less the shingles will hurt.

Starch Bath

Although not recommended for those who have shingles on their forehead, a starch bath can be a great way to alleviate the pain of shingles for a short time. To make a starch bath, fill the tub with warm water and add a handful of cornstarch. Stay in the tub for at least 20 minutes and when you get out, take a couple of pain relievers. This may be just what you need to get to sleep.
