Gray hair is one of the first signs of aging. Once it shows, you need to decide whether you’ll hide it or embrace it. Dye is the most common solution for gray hair, but not everybody can or wants to use it. According to DermNet, some people are allergic to paraphenylenediamine (PPD), the chemical that makes hair dye permanent. For those who are allergic, getting rid of gray hair without dye becomes essential.
Step 1
Try henna to produce a coppery tone for your hair. Henna covers gray well, but it can dry hair out, so make sure you condition your hair frequently if you use henna. To cover gray, buy a packet of powdered henna and mix with water until you form a paste. Massage well into your hair, then cover with a plastic shower cap. Wait for 15 minutes, then rinse with water. Don’t shampoo until the next day.
Step 2
Use sage tea to darken your hair. Heat a pot of water until it boils. Turn the stove off and place a handful of dried sage leaves inside the pot. Let steep for at least 30 minutes before straining. Shampoo your hair well, then rinse your hair repeatedly with the sage water. It will take several weeks for the color to completely cover the gray, so continue rinsing as needed.
Step 3
Make a rinse using tag alder bark. This mix will give your hair a lighter shade of brown or dark blondish tone, so it’s a good choice if you don’t want the darker tones produced by other natural products. Simmer bark chips in water for at least 30 minutes. Let them cool and rinse your hair. You will need to rinse repeatedly to see results.
