When it comes to exercise bikes, many are available to choose from, but most of them fall into two distinct categories—a stationary bike and a recumbent bike. These two bikes are very different from each other, but experts have not declared one better than the other. However, when it comes to comfort and safety, recumbent bikes are better.
Safety
Because recumbent exercise bikes are low to the ground, they are safer and result in less impact on the knees and lower back. No matter how hard the workout, a rider cannot stand on the pedals like on a stationary bike, eliminating many of the injuries that can occur on an upright exercise bike.
Riders
Recumbent bikes are made for riders of all levels, and specifically for people with balance and back problems who need extra back support. The position of the recumbent seat ensures a rider good spinal posture while working out. Upright stationary bikes are made for riders wanting a low-impact aerobic workout that doesn't put too much strain on the back.
Design
Recumbent bikes have bucket seats with a back rest and are low to the ground for a comfortable workout. The pedals are in front of the body so the legs are horizontal around hip height, and the feet are in front of the body. Sometimes recumbent bikes will have as many as three wheels for added balance. An upright stationary bike is made to feel more like a road bike with upright, wide seats. Stationary bikes have a vertical leg position, meaning you are using them in a downward motion.
Injury
Recumbent bikes are easier on the joints. Recumbent bikes let your body exercise at an angle at which your body weight is not stressing your joints. Even people with back and knee problems will find a recumbent bike easy to use. Because you can’t stand on the pedals of a recumbent bike like you can on some upright stationary bikes, your joints are protected from injury.
Movement
Experts believe the reclined position of a recumbent bike encourages a slower, less intense workout and restricts the areas of the body that are getting worked out. A rider of a stationary bike can stand or sit while pedaling, allowing for different areas of the body to be targeted.
