Racquetball is a competitive and recreational sport that requires quickness, athleticism, decision-making ability and creativity. The game requires nonstop movement since it is played in an enclosed court and the ball comes at you at high speeds from all directions. Strategy is a big part of the game. A well-placed shot can help you win a point and seize control of the match. On the other hand, a power shot may end up giving your opponent a chance to steal a point.
Step 1
Hit your serve from a variety of angles. The serve may be the most important stroke in racquetball. You can score points only when you are serving. The drive serve is the most prominent serve in the game. It is struck low against the front wall and rebounds toward either corner. However, if you are good, you will use the lob serve, the backhand serve and the Z-serve to keep your opponent off-balance.
Step 2
Hit your forehand returns as low as possible on the front wall. If you have the opportunity to step into your shot—as opposed to sprinting for it and just getting your racquet on it—you should be able to direct it to the spot on the front wall where you want it to go. If the shot you are hitting is thigh-high or lower, you have the opportunity to hit a winner that strikes the front wall 4 to 6 inches of the floor.
Step 3
Snap your backhand shots aggressively. Many players are somewhat fearful when they hit the backhand because they lack the control with that shot that they have with the forehand. However, a well-struck backhand requires a quick wrist snap and not the long arm swing that is associated with a tennis backhand. Work on your backhand in practice and warmups to use it effectively in a match.
Step 4
Hit a ceiling ball to change momentum in a point. If your opponent is in control of a point and you are struggling just to return it, use the ceiling ball to turn things around. If you can hit the ball off the ceiling close to the front wall, the ball will rebound deep into the backcourt. Your opponent will have to wait longer to hit it, and that may blunt his momentum if he lacks patience.
