Racquetball is a sport that almost always has a competitive aspect to it. Even when the game is played by amateurs who are still in the learning phase, the game lends itself to hard competition. The game is played in an enclosed court and all four walls are in play. As a result, the ball that bounds away from you may quickly come back at you, enabling you to steal a point that appeared to be going toward your opponent.
Step 1
Vary your serve to keep your opponent off balance. In racquetball, the only time you can score is when you win a point on your own serve. You will use the drive serve as your primary weapon, hitting it low off the front wall and driving it to your opponent's back or forehand side. But just like a baseball pitcher cannot throw his fastball on every pitch, you must change your serve from time to time. Use the lob serve, the backhand serve and the Z-serve to throw your opponent off balance and win points.
Step 2
Get to the front of the court if you want to take charge and dictate the pace of the point. The ball ultimately has to get to the front wall and if you are in front of your opponent, you can take a quick look at her before you strike the ball and hit it to an area away from where she is positioned. This will give you a better chance to hit a winner and take control of the match.
Step 3
Hit the drop shot when your opponent is positioned deep in the court. If you can finesse the ball off the front wall and have it carom softly to the side wall, your opponent will be forced to sprint in just to get it before it hits the floor a second time. This will either produce a winner for you or give you a chance to hit an easy put-away on the ensuing shot.
Step 4
Change the momentum of the point by hitting a ceiling shot. The closer to the front wall you can hit the ball off the ceiling, the deeper the shot will land in the court. This is an outstanding shot to use if your opponent has momentum and is dictating the pace of the point. Instead of continuing to pound the ball, he must wait before he gets another chance to hit. Some players lack patience, and this will produce an error.
