When most people think of Las Vegas, the thoughts of its world famous “Strip,” world class entertainment and, of course, lavish casinos and gambling come to mind. If you're a golfer, you think paradise. Some of the best courses in the country dot the panoramic Nevada landscape. There are courses to accommodate golfers of most skill levels but even the toughest courses offer enjoyment for the duffer. Tee times at all the courses begin at 6 a.m. and are the most expensive and coveted tee times until twilight rounds are offered at discounted rates. But before hitting the links, a good workout routine is recommended and there are many places in Las Vegas that offer sports gyms -- some specializing in golf fitness as well as overall nutrition.

Golfers Are Athletes Too

To look at many golfers, one might not think they are athletes the likes of LeBron James or Alex Rodriguez but they are. Good golfers, like good athletes in any sport need good nutrition to power them through long days of walking rough terrain and using muscles many but golfers wouldn't think twice about. A good consistent golf swing requires a great deal of athletic ability. Strength, power, flexibility, balance, centerred stability, acute body awareness and endurance are physical traits that any consistent golfer must possess.

Nutrition

The specialized golf athletic facilities stress nutrition as part of a sound golf game. It's not unlike good nutrition in general. Good golf nutrition has many of the same characteristics as good general nutrition. Golf trainers emphasize low-fat foods, balanced portions of lean protein and slow release carbohydrates like lean meat, fish and poultry. Carbohydrates should focus on whole wheat sources and green leafy vegetables. High starch food like potatoes and foods high in sugar will do little to enhance the stamina you'll need for the oft-challenging trek across some of the top notch courses offered in the area.

Training Facilities

There are quite a few training facilities geared toward the golfing crowd that may be headed to TPC Las Vegas or the Rio Seco Golf Clubs where its not uncommon for professional golfers to brush up on their games. In addition to nutritional guidance, places like Sin City Training offer a workout regimen geared exclusively to golfers. The training facilities usually aren't limited to strength and fitness programs, either. An entire spectrum of training, nutritional guidance, and rehabilitation. Not surprisingly, there are a lot of repetitive stress injuries from golfing.

For the Organic Golfer

There are countless organic restaurants and grocery stores throughout and nearby the city covering most every imaginable cultural cuisine. There are even several Vegan restaurants, if that suits you. From Chinese and Thai organic restaurants to Indian and Mexican and even basic American cuisine available at very reasonable prices throughout the city.

Top-Notch Courses

One thing you should know before hitting the fairways is that each of the more than 20 courses is about 7,000 yards, give or take a couple hundred yards and none are on level terrain. Without taking into account the extra effort needed to traverse a lot of uphill lies, each course is roughly equivalent to walking 4 miles. And that is if every shot is true. Add the effort navigating the oft-hilly terrain and you've just given yourself a considerable workout. In terms of burning off calories, it's at least equivalent to eating a 5 oz. steak, fries (baked not deep fried) and a salad. Leave your score at the 18th hole and eat up.
