Depression saps a lot of joy out of life. Thus, it is important to be proactive and work to add activities to daily life that add joy and bring a smile to the face. When struggling with depression, make good nutrition, exercise and getting adequate sleep a priority. Focusing on physical health enables the body to function at its best; this also leads to stronger mental health. Depression often leads to poor decisions due to feeling overwhelmed. Focus on finding ways to relieve stress via exercise, friendships and adding humor to your life. Find ways to make your mental health your first priority. Say no to commitments that will take away time you need to take care of your health and your emotions.
Exercise and Nutrition
Moving the body via exercise helps lift the mood to battle depression. Walking is a great activity to work the body, get fresh air, enjoy nature and lift the spirits. A regular walking regimen may keep depression at bay and also enhance overall health. Eat natural foods with an emphasis on whole grains, vegetables and fruits. Foods with omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, walnuts, flax, almonds, hazelnuts and herring are also believed to enhance serotonin levels, which may work to combat depression.
Friendships and Love
Maintain friendships and build a bond with new friends, too. Friendships help everyone maintain a connection to the past, feel safe in the world and know that they have support and love coming their way at difficult times. Love adds a feeling of joy and serenity to life. Working to find or maintain love is a critical task and one that may help keep depression at bay.
Laughter
Find ways to add humor to life. Hang out with funny people. Read websites with a focus on humor. Rent or buy funny movies and invite people over to share the fun. Laughing together is a wonderful way to improve everyone's mood. Write down information about things that amuse you and later distribute it in an e-mail. Compile photographs that make you laugh. Having an album of pictures that amuses you is helpful during difficult times.
Obtain Adequate Sleep
America is a sleep-deprived nation. We over pack our schedules and worry about things we did not get done. Anxiety is a too common complaint for many adults. All of this impacts the time available for sleep and the quality of sleep. It is important to make sleep a priority. Set a regular bedtime and stick with it. Keep the television, computer and other electronic devices out of the bedroom. Adults need 8 hours of sleep per night. Get enough sleep to allow your body to experience deep sleep and awaken refreshed and energetic.
