Morphine is a prescription drug used to treat pain, often after surgery. It works by activating the brain's reward center and alleviating pain. The Partnership for a Drug-Free America says that morphine is manufactured as a tablet, syrup, injectable or a suppository. This means it can be swallowed, injected or administered in the rectum. Morphine is highly addictive, and the tolerance for it rises quickly. Morphine addiction can affect a person's life and health in many ways.
Boredom
According to Soft Landing Recovery, a person who is addicted to morphine experiences a reduction in energy on a day to day basis. This leads to losing interest in the activities of daily life. When this occurs, a person will often find that his relationships suffer. Additionally, people who are addicted to morphine often lose their jobs because they aren't interested in the job anymore and may stop going.
Crime
As with any drug addiction, obtaining the drug of choice consumes a person's life and they spend most of their time acquiring or using the drug. Soft Landing Recovery says that a morphine addiction can cost 100 to 200 dollars per day. Many people who are addicted to morphine turn to stealing, prostitution or drug dealing to support their habit. There has been an increase in the demand for illegal prescription drugs on the street in recent years. Another crime that occurs with prescription drug addiction is doctor shopping, where a person will get several prescriptions for their drug from several different doctors.
Impaired Respiration
The continued use of morphine can negatively effect a person's breathing, says Treatment Solutions Network. This includes hypoventilation, shallow breathing and even a depression of respiration. This can lead to death. Additionally, the National Institute on Drug Abuse says that a single large dose of morphine can result in death. Many people who have built up a tolerance to morphine will take larger and larger doses to achieve the same effects, but this can result in an overdose.
