Sometimes in life, circumstances such as surgery, injuries or balance problems dictate you must use the assistance of a cane to walk. If you do not use proper technique when walking with a cane, it can make your stride awkward, cause pain, or even make the problem worse. Walking properly with a cane is easy if you observe a few basic rules.

Step 1

Pick up your cane in the opposite hand of the side of your body that is injured or weak.

Step 2

Move the cane and your injured leg forward at the same time as you begin to walk. Keep the cane close to your body for support and balance, according to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Step 3

Support your body weight with the cane and your bad leg, and then step through with your stronger leg. Support your weight on your strong leg and repeat the process. Set the cane down directly across from the instep of your weaker foot as you walk.

Step 4

Walk up stairs by stepping up with your good leg, then following with the cane and your weaker leg, advises the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. When walking stairs, the cane should still be in the hand of the side of your stronger leg. To move down the stairs, place the cane on the stair first, then the weaker leg, then the stronger leg. Hold onto a railing if possible.

Tips and Warnings

  • Take small steps when you turn around and do not pivot on your foot. Your cane should reach to the crease of your wrist when you are standing straight. Your elbow should be bent slightly when walking with a cane.
