Exercises for Eyes That Use Computer Screens

Prolonged periods of looking at a computer screen can bring on eyestrain. Symptoms of eyestrain include blurriness, headache, double vision and dry eyes. The good news is that there are simple exercises you can do to avoid computer-related eyestrain.

Step 1

Blink often while using the computer to reduce eyestrain. A normal blinking rate is once every 4 seconds, or 15 times per minute.

Step 2

Follow the "20-20-20" rule. Every 20 minutes, look up from your computer screen, locate an object that is 20 feet away and stare at it for 20 seconds.

Step 3

Cover your eyes with the palms of your hands when the glare of the computer screen gets to be too harsh. Do this for a few seconds and then slowly uncover them.

Step 4

Do eye rolls, as needed, to reduce computer eyestrain. With your eyes closed, roll your eyeballs slowly in circular motions.

Tips and Warnings

  • To reduce glare from the computer screen, alter the way it tilts or change the background color to one that minimizes reflections. Another way to prevent eyestrain is to adjust your computer screen so that the top of it is in line with your eyes. Looking slightly downward at the screen is easier on the eyes.
  • If vision problems are interfering with everyday activities, make an appointment promptly to visit with your eye doctor.
