Protein-based hair conditioners are ideal for damaged hair, helping to smooth the shaft of the hair, according to Natural-HomeRemedies.org. Instead of buying a pricey protein treatment, you can make your own at home using ingredients already in your refrigerator. Add rich, moisturizing ingredients to your protein hair conditioner to make your hair softer, shinier and healthier. Plan to use a protein treatment at least once a month but as often as twice a week depending, upon your hair.

Step 1

Beat two whole eggs or several egg yolks until frothy in a medium-sized bowl. Stir in 5 tbsp. of plain, unsweetened yogurt, recommends Ayushveda.com. Add half of a mashed, ripe avocado or a tablespoon of oil if you prefer a more moisturizing treatment. Make your protein treatment when you are ready to use it.

Step 2

Apply the protein hair conditioner to your dry or slightly damp hair. Leave your hair damp if it is especially coarse or curly to make it easier to manage. Work the egg, avocado and yogurt mixture through the hair, making sure to coat the entire length of the hair from root to end.

Step 3

Cover your hair with a plastic shower cap or wrap your head securely in plastic wrap. Leave the conditioning mask in place for 15 minutes to one hour.

Step 4

Use cool water to rinse the conditioner from your hair. If you've added oil or avocado, shampoo after your egg and yogurt hair treatment. Apply your usual daily conditioner after a protein treatment if you used an egg-based treatment without added moisturizers.
