Breast augmentation surgery can be dauntingly expensive and invasive. Although no methods besides surgical intervention have been proven to increase bust size, some evidence suggests that herbal supplements can create hormonal shifts that encourage the increased development of breast tissue. Despite their popularity, Mayo Clinic physician Sandhya Pruthi warns against the use of natural breast enhancement supplements. Some may theoretically increase the risk of breast cancer, while others can cause serious drug interactions. Consult your health care provider before using any over-the-counter drug or supplement.
Soy Isoflavones
Isoflavones derived from soy are sold without a prescription as menopause remedies, fertility enhancers and breast enhancers. These estrogen-like plant compounds occur naturally in the soybean and may be isolated for use in breast augmentation pills. They may elevate breast size by increasing the production of estrogen, a female reproductive hormone, in the female body. The National Institutes of Health regard soy's use in breast enhancement as theoretical; no studies have evaluated its efficacy as a cosmetic drug.
Red Clover
The flowers and leaves of the red clover plant contain isoflavones similar to those found in soy, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Red clover's estrogen-boosting properties make it a popular choice among people suffering from menopausal complaints, osteoporosis and infertility. Teas and capsules made from red clover flower offer inconsistent levels of isoflavones; seek a product that offers a standardized extract. Red clover may interact with oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy.
Licorice Root
Licorice root is a concentrated source of the medicinal compound anethole, which is chemically similar to estrogen. According to the National Institutes of Health, licorice root supplements cause an increase in levels of estrogen and prolactin in women's bodies. Because these lactation-related hormones are associated with increased breast size, it is possible that licorice root can improve the fullness of breast tissue. The NIH warns that this popular supplement can cause many side effects, including hypertension and menstrual changes.
Anise Seed
According to a report published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, the seeds of the anise and star-anise plants contain substantial quantities of anethole, dianethole and photoanethole-- the same medicinal compounds found in licorice root. Historically, these hormone-affecting herbs have been used to stimulate lactation in breastfeeding mothers. Modern herbal breast augmentation supplements now include anise seed as a primary ingredient. Although generally safe when used in small doses, anise seed has never been studied for its' long-term safety. Discuss the potential risks with your health care provider.
