How to Reduce Age Spots on the Face

Age spots appear on your face when you expose your skin to sunlight and UV rays over a long period of time. Age spots most commonly form on people over the age of 50; however, they can appear on your face at nearly any age.

The spots form when the chemical melanin increases production in your skin cells. When your skin is exposed to the sun, the rays of light damage the collagen and elastin, chemicals that make your skin appear young and healthy in appearance. When this happens, you skin is more likely to form age spots. You can, however, reduce the appearance of age spots on your face by using the right products, cleaning your face properly, and using the right medicine.

Step 1

Use an over-the-counter cream on your face. You can find medicine at your local pharmacy that will reduce your age spots using a mild steroid as an ingredient.

The Mayo Clinic notes that steroids will gradually fade your age spots, but it may take up to three months to see results. If an over-the-counter medication doesn’t do the trick, visit your dermatologist, who can prescribe a stronger medication. The most common prescriptions for age spots are hydroquinone and tretinoin.

Step 2

Put buttermilk on your age spots to reduce their color. Buttermilk will gradually fade your age spots using a natural bleach. Buy a carton of buttermilk at your grocery store, pour a cup of the liquid into a bowl and dip a cotton ball into the bowl. Rub the cotton ball on your age spots and let the liquid evaporate into your skin.

Step 3

Rub lemon juice on your age spots to fade their color. Like buttermilk, lemon juice is full of a natural bleach that over time will reduce the age spots on your face. Go to the grocery store and buy a fresh lemon or bottle of lemon juice. Squeeze or pour the liquid into a bowl and dip a cotton ball into the juice. Rub onto the age spots on your face and let it evaporate.

Step 4

Stay out of the sun. Exposure to the sun is the number one cause of age spots, so if you want to fade them, you must stay out of direct sunlight and UV rays.

If you have to be in the sun, make sure you wear clothing that covers your body, like long pants and sleeves, a hat and sunglasses. Wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. By eliminating your exposure to the sun's harmful rays, you will see your age spots fade a little right away.

Step 5

Exfoliate your skin to reduce your age spots. Go to your local pharmacy and buy a loofah that has firm fibers. A loofah will remove the top layer of your skin, which contains the most dead skin and melanin. By getting rid of the dead skin, you can gradually reduce your age spots. Add a mild soap to the loofah so you don’t scratch your skin.

Be careful when using it on your face, as the skin is more sensitive than other areas of your body. Use your loofah at least once a week on the age spots on your face.
