How to Use Beeswax on Braces

Beeswax covers sharp orthodontic braces and wires that poke into the mouth, which protects the tongue and gums from developing pain and sores. Once you become accustomed to wearing your braces, your mouth will not be so sensitive to the braces. Even after mouth sores are no longer a problem, you should keep beeswax handy in case of a broken wire in your braces. The beeswax can be used to cover the broken wire until you have a chance to see your orthodontist.

Step 1

Wash your hands so that dirt does not transfer from your fingers to the beeswax. Rinse your mouth out with water or brush your teeth to remove food particles from your braces. Break off a pea size or smaller piece of beeswax.

Step 2

Roll the piece of beeswax into a ball, using your index finger and thumb. The beeswax will soften as you roll it between your fingers. If your hands are too cold to soften the wax, rub the palms of your hands together using a quick back-and-forth motion until you feel the warmth build between your hands.

Step 3

Place the beeswax onto the part of your braces that are causing you discomfort. Push the beeswax down to fix it into place and cover the braces. Pull the beeswax off your teeth before eating, drinking or before going to bed. Discard used beeswax.

Tips and Warnings

  • Place a thick piece of beeswax on broken wires to prevent the wire from poking your gums.
  • Only use beeswax from your dentist or purchase 100 percent pure food-grade beeswax.
